Salt does something to side glass that people rarely connect to the glass itself. Winter brine from the Belt Parkway works into the window channels and the lower door seams, and over a few seasons the felt runs stiffen and the metal behind them starts to lift with corrosion. A pane running in a channel like that is under sideways load every time you press the switch, and it eventually breaks along an edge with no impact at all. So when we take a door apart on a car from these blocks, we look at the runs and the lower door skin before fitting anything.
The fitting is straightforward once that is settled. The panel comes off, the broken pane is released, and the shell and drain channels are cleared, which on a salt-country car means clearing corrosion debris as well as glass. Blocked drains are worth mentioning: they are the reason doors rot from the inside out here, and a door full of tempered pellets drains even worse. The new pane goes into clean clamps, the window is cycled through its full travel to confirm it tracks square, and the trim is refitted.
