Three forces do most of the work here. The Belt Parkway supplies both stone and salt: its shoulders shed aggregate, and winter brine spray reaches cars parked well back from the road. Rockaway Boulevard and Cross Bay Boulevard supply the truck traffic, and loose gravel off construction and delivery vehicles is what puts a bullseye in a windshield at 45 miles an hour. The third is the elevated structure over Liberty Avenue, where flaking rust and dust settle onto parked cars and get dragged across the glass by dry wipers. Layer on the summer sand blown up from the barrier beaches and you get a neighborhood where the outer glass surface and the headlight lenses both dull faster than the mileage would suggest.
From Liberty Avenue, take Woodhaven Boulevard north to the Long Island Expressway or continue to Junction Boulevard, then work east on 34th Avenue to 126-73. The Van Wyck north to the Grand Central Parkway westbound is usually faster if you are starting nearer Rockaway Boulevard. Either way, budget twenty to twenty-five minutes for the eight miles.
