There are two different problems that both look like a cloudy headlight from the driver's seat, and telling them apart decides what the fix costs. The first is oxidation on the outside of the lens, which is what most cars have and what restoration is for. The second is moisture inside the housing, which fogs the inner surface and dulls the reflector behind it. Polishing the outside of a unit full of condensation achieves nothing at all, and we will not pretend otherwise to make the sale.
For the outside problem, the process is quick and the result is obvious. Progressive wet-sanding takes the degraded layer off, polishing brings the plastic back to clear, and a sealer protects it from starting over. For the inside problem, the housing has lost its seal, usually at a joint or around the bulb access cover, and water gets in and does not leave. Sometimes that is repairable and often it is not, in which case the assembly gets replaced with the correct part. Either way we check the bulbs and set the aim before the car goes back out at night.

Humidity is the reason we mention moisture more often to Astoria customers than to most. Cars parked along the waterfront blocks and up near the park sit in damp air for much of the year, and a housing whose seal has begun to fail takes on water faster in that environment than one kept a few miles inland. The tell is condensation that appears on the inside of the lens after rain and clears slowly over a day or two. If you have seen that on your car, mention it when you book, because it changes the conversation from a forty-minute polish to a parts question and we would rather work that out in advance.

Occasionally, if the seal failure is minor and can be found. More often the housing has to be replaced, because water that gets in once will get in again and it corrodes the reflector coating behind the bulb over time. We will look at where it is entering and tell you honestly whether a repair is realistic or whether you are postponing the inevitable.
